Young The Giant

[audio:http://dreamlandapparel.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/Young-the-Giant-My-Body-Official-Video.mp3|titles=Young the Giant - My Body]I’ve been receiving quite a few requests lately to cover California band Young the Giant. After their killer performance at the MTV Video Music Awards last night, I felt this was the best time to shine a light on this great quintet.

A band formerly known as The Jakes, Young the Giant is quickly making a name for themselves in the music industry. Just a few months ago, popular English singer Morrissey declared that they were one of his favourite new bands. After playing festivals all around North America, they are set to go on tour with Incubus in the next few days. And last night, they were one of the few rock bands to be asked to perform at the VMA’s.

Lead singer Sameer Gadhia is the man who leads this group to greatness. His vocals, at times, remind me of Chris Martin from Coldplay. In “Strings,” Gadhia is incredibly aggressive and in your face, but at the same time, it’s infectious. On “Islands,” he shows he can carry a ballad with a calming, almost haunting falsetto. And in “Cough Syrup,” the song has elements of a ballad and a rock song, and Gadhia can pull both aspects off wonderfully.

For an alternative indie band, Young the Giant’s lyrics are surprisingly sentimental. In some songs, you can see that there is an inspiration from literature that make it poetic. “Whispers in the dark they hit the trees, and they run into your heart to find mama’s sleeves. Daddy ain’t awake yet and daylight’s gone, you’re afraid of the dark, you think of mama’s bones. Cause I can’t live like this.” This selection from “Take Me Home,” one of their full acoustic tracks, is moving and emotional and it was the first song to bring my attention to Young the Giant.

The ability to write a catchy song is key to get popular in the music industry these days, and Young the Giant’s catchiest track is undoubtedly “My Body.” The chorus is simple, but it will most definitely be stuck in your head once you hear it. This was a huge radio hit for them, and it really put them in the mainstream.

These guys are great and I urge you to give them a quick listen. Great instrumentation and they have a really unique live sound in their recordings and I’m sure you’ll like them. Also, give me more suggestions for bands to check out. I love hearing what you guys are listening to.

Check out Young the Giant’s website and support another great indie band!

These guys are actually not that bad. I saw them on the red carpet for the awards and overlooked them. They definitely earned the nomination for “Best New Artist, but I’m glad Tyler the Creator won to be honest ;)

Great piece dude! I actually really dug these songs. I’m not normally into stuff like this, but I really enjoy the front-man’s voice. Very iconic and unique. You continue to impress me brotha! Keep up the great work sir.

Thanks again bros! And yeah Jon, Tyler the Creator is pretty sick, though I wasn’t a huge fan of his acceptance speech haha!

I love his voice too Chris, so different. Thanks for the support brother!
