The One

How do you tell her she’s the one? How do you explain your interpretation of reality is dependent upon her existence? It’s a weighted question. It’s seemingly overbearing for the subject, and in this cynical world it’s viewed as high treason, blasphemous nonsense. Yet, it’s true, and I’ll explain to you why.

Like most people I know my understanding of “love” was influenced primarily by conversation and popular culture. Like most people I know my experience with love was forged in the pits of adolescence, and refined in its aftermath. And like this unnamed mass I’ve heard about “the one,” and questioned if such a miracle were true.

Long ago the comic playwright Aristophanes protested to Plato that humanity as we see it is fractured, broken in twain, and unknowingly in search of completion. To put it less poetically: every human has a soul, and every soul has its mate, and only when the one has its other will it be complete.

Since this symposium the concept of “Soul Mates,” of “The One,” has entered into our understanding. For some this is preposterous, and for others it is sacred doctrine. However, for me it is a truth far more specific.

It all started with a smile. The world was dark and repetitive until that smile. Overlooked then, (as then I was overwhelmed), but behind that smile I found the one… and suddenly all was lost.

Alone again I’ve returned to the query of ‘soul-mates’ and the doctrine therein. Surprisingly, it is in science wherein I’ve found the greatest solace. Following the turn of the twentieth century Albert Einstein proposed the idea of “Special Relativity.” This theory professes that time is not a universal standard, but is instead dependent upon the observer.

Time therefore is irrelevant, and eternity no longer a qualification; Love if had at all is had forever.

I may never see that smile again. I may be laid to rest alone. Yet, in the chaos of all that came before and after there remains an intersecting moment. Therein resides an eternity; therein I found completion.

Now, when doubt enlists its forces, and darkness conspires against me; when fear seeks my subservience, and death reaches out with welcome… I’m comforted to know I found the one, that she smiled, and that she loved me.

i hope we all have the chance to find ‘the one’.
would be a shame if we didn’t.
my favourite line from your blog – every human has a soul, and every soul has its mate, and only when the one has its other will it be complete.

Rob liked that one too :)

I have to say that my favorite line has to be, “I’m comforted to know I found the one, that she smiled, and that she loved me.” That’s why I closed with it ;)

I dont believe in the one. I believe in the one right now. Hopefully that person is someone you can evolve with and grow with and through the maturation and progression of your two selves, you will keep wanting to be together and interested in each other. This takes work, involvement, love, passion and a hearty dose of humility. The one? Really? The one at 14 was not the one at 20 and the one at 24 was not the one at 26. How do you trust emotions if they are so fleeting (thanks BV)? I’m not sure. I’m glad you experienced that, its momentous. I think I did – I looked it up and down, but then it changed into something that wasn’t good for me anymore. So what do you have there? Not the one? I don’t know. But just because something changes, and not for the better, doesn’t mean there won’t be others. Nearly seven billion people in this world. We’ll be okay.

Good insight, but I obviously view things differently. The “One Right Now” is too void of life for me. It’s too logical, and I’m not a creature consumed by such. Nevertheless, I understand the sentiments, and tried to put a sense in the piece that such beliefs are had, other beliefs, that are not like mine. Thanks for fleshing out some opposing perspective.

Dude, I am so proud of you and what you’ve accomplished. I feel honored to write with you, and it’s pieces like this where I truly realize your genius. This moved me more than words can say, and I am honestly left speechless. Very well done. Applause. Happy 100 brother. Love you dog.

      @ChrisAndFame — Thank you.

This was definitely a milestone. 100 blogs in and I really am realizing that I am just starting to get the hang of things. After we parted ways following yesterdays meeting I was stressed about following through with this blog. I had my notes, I had my ideas, but I knew it needed more. So I just said what I felt… and this is honestly how I feel.

“Time therefore is irrelevant, and eternity no longer a qualification; Love if had at all is had forever.”

I love this line. Makes me look at things differently. It gives you a different perspective to think that ‘The One’ that got away was really yours forever.

    Good work bro.

I’m glad you picked up on that line. I tried to combine good old “Huron University” philosophy class with main campus scientific rhetoric! LOL

True story, thanks for sharing and seeing what I was trying to get at.

      BASED ON A TRUE STORY!!!
