Tha Carter IV

The other day I met a young man in line for Toronto’s annual Fan Expo. The topic that sparked our conversation was the book I was reading, George R.R. Martin’s, “A Clash of Kings.” He shared his decade long love for the series of books it is a part of. My response was to ask him how he liked the latest edition. He in turn gave me the answer many long time fans give, “It was okay.”

Between the release of the fourth and fifth books fans were forced to endure a six year wait. Knowing this I asked this young man if he bought the new book opening day. “Of course,” he eagerly replied.

“And how long did it take you to read it?” I inquired. “Four or five days,” he responded. Smiling I explained that great experiences after great waits take more time to process.

I say this in relation to my blog on “Tha Carter IV” for obvious reasons. Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter III” hit shelves June 10th, 2008. After a series of set-backs its sequel sets sail tomorrow. During this three year wait fans have had some filler to ease the gaps. Most recently, his apologetically titled mixtape, “Sorry 4 the Wait.” Numerous blogs and other opinion related mediums ranted it ridiculous. It’s the highest downloaded mixtape in recorded history. The fans spoke in the opposite. 720,000+ downloads and rising every minute the mixtape is a monster. However, we’re here to speak about its successor.

Tha Carter IV is Weezy’s ninth solo album. A plethora of producers from the series third, (and most financially/critically acclaimed,) chapter are back with a potpourri of instrumentals. Bangladesh, Cool & Dre, Polow da Don, Streetrunner, and Infamous all return for a second offering. There is also an onslaught of incredible beats from new comers to the series. Noel “Detail” Fisher blesses the album with its most recent single, “How to Love.” And its Chris Robinson directed music video is ready and able to accept some VMA’s. Furthermore, Toronto native Megaman I believe is the same Megaman who produces the self-titled track that see’s Weezy equipped with a machine-gun flow. Megaman worked with Drake on “Congratulations,” and Drake graces this album with an incredible verse and a timeless hook.

The hook can be found on the already popular “She Will,” and the verse on the fiery “It’s Good.” Though people have gotten cryptic about interpreting the “Baby money” line, it seems a stretch. However, if it is true that war has been waged with Jay-Z fans would be foolish to think that either artist will capture a decisive victory with ease. Beef aside, it must be stated that every guest appearance is memorable. From Andre 3000 to T-Pain everyone comes alphabetically correct. Nas and Tech N9ne arrive unexpectedly and exit ear drums with solid sixteens. John Legend croons poetically on “So Special,” and Bruno Mars blesses the ‘Deluxe Edition’ with an insightful chorus on “Mirror.”

However, before the standard edition ends Busta Rhymes offers the first words of appreciation, “Tunechi thanks for giving us a whole ‘nother classic with, “Tha Cater IV.” Close the curtains and cue the lights; check the people’s expression and prep for the backlash. Folks are already hating on the album and it hasn’t even vacated the vacuum wrap. In fact, many have been hating since its cover art dropped, or when the introductory single hit airwaves. They want chapters one, two, or three. They aren’t prepared four what’s at hand. They want a quick buzz four what will become a lasting legacy. This is an album that will take more than a spin. It’s the entire series summarized; a variety of sounds spoken by one man.

Great experiences after great waits take time more to process. I already love this album, and I’m looking forward to its future.

    Nice job covering this album dude. I liked the stance you took on it’s seemingly mediocre initial buzz. We’ll see what happens in the future. Time will tell. It’s an ok album. Certainly not the worst the world of rap has ever seen, though far from the best. I still love Weezy wayne. Always will. Just very dissapointed on what he settled with for this disc.
