Tastebuds: Citrus Vodka Tonic

Ok… First off, I am by no means, calling myself Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise in Cocktail). However, I have worked as a bartender before – and done enough alcoholic sampling of my own to consider myself knowledgeable when it comes to beverages. Vodka is, and always has been, my liqour of choice. It’s fresh, sharp and it can be mixed with virtually everything. When I go to a club or bar, I don’t like to complicate things when I order, so I usually keep it simple with a classic Vodka Tonic. Usually what I receive back is a poorly mixed, weak and pathetic excuse for a proper spirit. But hey, how are you going to make money if you don’t rip people off?

Despite my cynicism and overall bitterness towards most bartenders in the city of Toronto (and elsewhere), I have been mixed a good drink the odd time. One of those times, I received this drink. Although it doesn’t have 1000 ingredients, nor does it light on fire – it is tasty and refreshing. I promise, if you make this drink properly, and with the exact measurements given, you will not be let down.

  1. 1.5 oz shot of Vodka (I prefer Grey Goose…and no, not because I’m pretentious)
  2. 1 lime wheel
  3. The juice of 1 whole orange
  4. The juice of 1 whole grapefruit
  5. 3 oz of Tonic Water (I prefer Shweppes)
  6. 3-4 ice cubs

  1. Add the ice cubes into a medium sized cocktail glass
  2. Squeeze in the juice of the grapefruit and orange
  3. Pour in the Vodka
  4. Pour in the Tonic Water
  5. Garnish with the lime wheel
  6. Stir well
  7. Bow down to my liquid heaven
