Taste Buds: Monastery Bakery & Delicatessen

If you live anywhere in Oakville, you already know about this god-sent blessing to baked goods. Monastery Bakery has been around for about 15 years, and in that short period of time, established itself as one of the most iconic businesses in Oakville. Being of Italian descent, I have had my share of pastas, breads, cheeses, cured meats etc. I can, with 100% confidence say, that there is absolutely nothing that compares to the food that comes out of this place.

Everyday, there is a seemingly endless supply of every kind of bread you can imagine. Their deli meats are mainly imported from Italy, as are a lot of their canned foods and freshly made coffees. There is a hot food takeout section in which customers can choose from fresh pastas, chicken, potatoes, pizzas, and calzones (just to name a few). The desert counter is filled with a delectable array of pastries, cookies, pies and cakes. The options are virtually endless. However, needless to say, being a business that specializes is selling carbohydrates, this is no health food store.

It is rumored that Monastery is run and operated by members of the Italian mafia, but if you ask me, that only adds to the appeal. The thought of passing by espresso sipping Tony Soprano types while I shop for Prosciutto and Parmesan is admittedly exciting for me. The staff is always friendly and more than willing to help with anything. Although the bakery has experienced a huge amount of growth and success in the past decade or so, whenever you walk in, there is always an intimate feeling of family and community that we Italians crave.

If I have anything to do with it, I’ll be enjoying those heavenly potato wedges until the day I die. True fans know.

I miss their pizza dough! It was awesome, and that lady that they had who would make fresh sushi.
