Sports: Evil Empire – The 2010-11 Miami Heat

The Evil Empire: The 2010-11 Miami Heat

Question: Where were you when Joe Carter hit that home-run back in 1993? What about when Sidney “The Kid” Crosby scored in overtime at the Vancouver Olympics?  Can you still feel those Goosebumps?  These moments in sporting history are bookmarked forever in our psyches.  They define us as people. They were game-changers.

Question: Where were you when you discovered LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh were actually going to be playing on the same team?  Did you get those same Goosebumps?

Question: How does this unholy union make you feel?  Like this?  Or more like this?

The fact is these three young men have polarized the sporting world.  From this moment forward every one of us, sports fan or not, had an opinion on “Miami Thrice”.

LeBron “King” James: The Chosen One; Sultan of Slam; Jordan Air-Apparent.

Dwayne “Flash” Wade: NBA Champion; “heart of a lion”.

Chris Bosh: CB4; “the face of a franchise”.

Together in South Beach.

When I first heard about the  reality of the situation I was left both strangely electrified and mildly bitter.  Sort of like the taste of Red Bull.  I mean, could I really put up with a younger, cockier version of the Boston Celtics?  Michael Jordan was quoted as “There’s no way, with hindsight, I would’ve ever called up Larry [Bird], called up Magic [Johnson] and said, ‘Hey, look, let’s get together and play on one team”. These words mirrored my thoughts.  It was fundamentally wrong to stack the odds this way.  It felt as if the new NBA season would be something similar to the Washington Generals versus the Harlem Globe Trotters on steroids!

But then I let it marinate.  Once I left my feelings out of the equation I realized that I was witnessing sports history.  Never before had athletes of this magnitude put aside individual glory for world domination.  Whether this decision was right or wrong; good or evil, we are all left with our mouths open in anticipation.  No matter how much we want to hate them, no matter how much we want to see them win a championship, no matter how much we want to see them fail, we will all be watching!  This upcoming season will be one of the greatest sports moments of our lifetime.  Beers will be cracked, bets will be won and lost, and feelings will be hurt.

The real question is:  Love them or hate them will you be the only one left without a seat to the show?  Buckle up…

I’m glad someone has finally called this spade a spade! Everyone has such strong opinions about the merger but no one wants to admit that at the end of all the controversy, we can’t wait to see these guys play! Hopefully no one gets injured in pre-season forcing us to wait even longer for what is bound to be an explosion of talented entertainment.
