Exhibit: Rob Croxford – Time Rocket

I like my streetcars like I like my denim, strictly 501. I’m a west-end kid, and considering my proximity to the Queensway, the 501 Streetcar is my choice form of public transportation. In the early morning you can find me suited up and ducking through the rear doors. Late in the evening you can find me walking towards its rear and finding Toronto’s underbelly filling its seats.

All things aside I love my streetcar, and a few months ago I found a local artist who put that same love to paint. Rob Croxford is a beloved Torontonian whose pieces can be found in galleries all over the city. I first saw his work at “Art in the Village,” a wicked window shopping art gallery and framing store. Next, I stumbled into Croxford’s paintings at “Gallery at 129 Ossington.” It was there that I saw my favorite piece in his ‘Urban Series.’

The “Time Rocket” is a reference piece, a historical narrative about a great Toronto institution. Its color scheme and style is reminiscent of the 1950’s, (the era in which the 501 was king). Furthermore, the evening setting and accompanying quote remind me of the cozy and familiar nature of this local transportation staple.

Rob Croxford has been my introduction into our local faire, but since then I’ve found additional artist(s) to capture my eye. However, today it’s about the 501, this time capsule painting, and the joy of expression it inspires.
