Paul Simon

Paul Simon represents exactly what is missing in the work of modern artists. A true dedication to his craft. A continuous sense of originality. The songwriting that he has displayed throughout his career is almost unmatchable. His insightful lyrics and calming melodies enchant my soul in a way that no other musician is capable of. Don’t get me wrong, I am a huge Simon & Garfunkel fan, however his solo work speaks to me far more directly. Many of his song topics consist of memories from his childhood, life experiences, intimate moments and love. All things that bare an unprecedented relation to my life.

About 2 years ago I was first introduced to his music by my then girlfriend. His nostalgic “Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes” was the first song to ignite my curiosity for more. In this song (and many others) he incorporates an African element that flirts with the familiar riffs and melodies he is usually known for. I think as an artist, innovation and growth are essential in keeping your audience interested and captivated. His seventh studio album Graceland does just that. Riddled with African instruments and vocals, Paul provided fans with a completely different look at his range as an artist.

Some of his earlier and more conventional offerings are reminiscent of his work with Art Garfunkel, although his lyrics remain more personal, emotional and intimate.

At times, I allow myself to get lost in contemporary pop, and I forget the simplistic beauty that lives in music like this. I may be the only one, but these days I find myself truly resenting modern culture, and the first thing I do when this feeling becomes too overwhelming, is listen to Paul Simon. I highly suggest you do the same.

Songs I Recommend:

Hearts and Bones

Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War

Mother and Child Reunion

Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes

Son, you are modern culture… but I feel ya. I am not a fan of Simon, however, I promise I will give him a listen at work this week. Glad to see we had some work out today; a great end to a great day for me. Much love little bro. I think I got one for tomorrow, we shall see ;)
