No Strings Attached

The other day my phone rang and the Caller I.D. got me grinning. This led to a conversation that further enhanced my elation, and before I awoke from this seeming dream I was left with a parting gift. In-between friendly banter, (and the world’s most adorable laugh), the topic of “Movies” entered the verbal fore-front. Being the avid film-fan that I am I tossed a plethora of enjoyable examples into the mix. However, the voice on the other line ecstatically mentioned one, that they’d already seen twice, and that if I was worth my weight I’d see it for myself. The film was called “No Strings Attached,” and I went to see it shortly after I hung up that phone.

Billed as an everyday Rom-Com these advertising introductions are the only aspects of the film that I now view as a let down. No Strings Attached is instead a poignant eye-opening look at love. In other words, it’s the movie that finally got me over the depression relayed by “Blue Valentine,” and returned me to my belief that love conquers all.

The reason for this hard-hitting awakening rests in the central characters and their relationship. First, there is Emma. Emma is a Med-Student with Mediterranean roots. She’s a scientific intellect that feels love is foolish. On the other end of the heart-strings there is Adam. Adam is a laissez-faire writer caught in the corporate grind and trying to exit his father’s shadow. They’re seeming opposites and then they have sex, and then they fall in love.

The ups and downs that occur thereafter are better seen than explained. This is a time honored romance that can’t be broken down into words as it’s all about emotions. I will say this however: I loved it… and let me tell you why.

Long ago I had no intentions of being bound to the heart of another. The cords of courtship scared me, and I didn’t want to have my heart broken again. However, I learned the heart wants what it will, and that when it needs, logic can not sway its course. Love, true love, consumes the soul and attempts to break free from the ethereal and enter into reality. This is a struggle almost unbearable as the parties involved attempt to make the everyday more important. In the end the hope is that they realize the everyday is exactly that, whereas a love like this that I speak of… is eternal.

Today is a Beautiful day in my life at the movies.

That’s what’s up my blood. Loved this piece. Rom-coms are always welcome in my DVD player and I can’t wait until this one graces its presence. I was able to see through the sappy and predictable trailers you were describing, and look through to the actual message within. Great job man.

P.S That Peter Gabriel cut right through me sir. RIGHT through me.

@ChrisAndFame isn’t that the most amazing song? They play the instrumental during the most poignant points of the love story. This is a must own. I can’t wait to get my blu-ray player I go of movies to buy… I’ve been making a list!

YOU HAVE TO GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!! I’ve seen almost 20 movies already this year (in the cinema to be specific), and this one leads them all. I wouldn’t be surprised if it stays in the running for an award or two when the year ends and the Golden Babies roll around :)
