2011 NBA Playoffs – Round 1 Predictions (Western Conference)

Now that the Eastern conference is taken care of let’s head West.  Being a die-hard Golden State fan I’ve stayed up late many nights watching them battle the likes of the Lakers and Spurs. The West is where it’s at!  While the abysmal East has post-season teams with losing records, the worst the West has to offer is a squad 10 games over .500, (Memphis finished 46-36).

The West is also where fellow blogger Jon Godfrey’s favorite team sets up shop: the Los Angeles Lakers.  He’s a fanatic and he will be taking us through every Lakers match-up until they lose (or Three-Peat)!

Now, onto the predictions!

(1) San Antonio Spurs Vs. (8) Memphis Grizzlies

The Spurs are one of those teams you have to respect.  Sure they have the guy who cheated on Eva Longoria (Parker), the man who killed a bat during a game (Ginobli), and the veteran time forgot (Duncan), but they go about their business with a blue-collar approach.  That approach stems from their coach (Popovich) who is, in my opinion, the best in the league.  This year the Spurs were able to combine veteran play with youthful resilience; earning them the 2nd best record in the league. Sound familiar? They’ve done it before.  Memphis had a great year.  Their line-up is full of dangerous players like Randolph, Conley, Gasol and super-defender Tony Allen.  But the loss of superstar Rudy Gay is crippling.

Prediction:   Spurs win 4-1

(2) Los Angeles Lakers Vs. (7) New Orleans Hornets

The world’s greatest athlete returns to the playoffs. Look for Derek Fisher to come through in the clutch as one of the post-seasons top closers. Bynum and Barnes are healthy, with the latter soon to be a key-asset in the mid-court. The low-post is going to be all Lakers, and their bench is geared up for strategic rotations. Phil’s been here before. The Lakers 6th ring is already resembling the Bulls; doubters are rampant and haters plentiful. I see a six game stretch as the boys always struggle to find their rhythm in the first round. That said, they know they can win and they will. They’ve never had it easy, and that’s never mattered. Purple and Gold… the dynasty continues.

Prediction:  Lakers win 4-2

(3) Dallas Mavericks vs (6) Portland Trailer Blazers

I honestly like the Mavericks.  Sure they tend to choke in the playoffs, and their star-player listens to David Hasselhoff, but all of this intrigues me. Their owner is a regular on Entourage!  Dirk is amongst the most under-rated ever and with the acquisition of Tyson Chandler they’re now a force on the defensive end.  Portland reminds me of a nerdy-kid on a date with hot chick… cute, but it’ll never work out. Brandon Roy and Greg Oden were once talented young players, but injuries have destroyed their careers.  Aldridge, Miller and Wallace will put up a fight but Dallas will advance.

Prediction:  Mavericks win 4-2

(4) Oklahoma City Thunder vs (5) Denver Nuggets

My favorite sports-writer Bill Simmons calls them the “Zombie Sonics.”  Oak City Thunder is my second favorite team in the West.  If you watch basketball but haven’t seen Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook play, then you suck!  With the acquisition of Kendrick Perkins this team scares me like a screening of the Exorcist!  Sure Denver has played better after trading Carmelo Anthony and his ego, but they just don’t have the talent to take down the young Thunder.

Prediction:  Thunder win 4-1

There you have it, round one’s been prophesied and now it’s time to play. See you in Round 2!

I <3 my Lakers! There is no other singular element in sporting history that excites me as much as L.A. taken to the post-season. That said I am stoked to see the Spurs back as well. Even though Ginobli is out for the first game, he is one of the best playoff performers on the court today. I'm also stoked to see the Zombie Sonics get down and classy. With the shit show that went on in the NBA this year, I must admit I'm finally warming up to Durant.

That said, thank you for letting me cover something so incredibly close to my heart. It is certainly an honor. Here's to watching me get crazier and crazier as the weeks pass!

I’m not… their literally built to beat L.A. I almost lost my mind last season dealing with them in the first round, LOL! We need to do an MLatM tie-in. Hoosiers? Let’s make plans to get a Blu Moon evening and blog together.
