Musings Over Your Scent

[audio:http://dreamlandapparel.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Summertime-Live.mp3|titles=Summertime (Live) - Nina Simone]

One of the best feelings is waking up buried in the smell of the person you love. To the men, when you wake in the musky lavender of her shampoo with your face nestled in her neck, tell me that’s not happiness. We feel the same way about you, dear men in our lives: your smell is intoxicating. And when we get to know you, to love you, even your early morning body odour will turn us on.

If we do manage to drag ourselves out of bed, get to productively showering (not the other kind), and dressed to leave the house, I do enjoy cologne on a man. That can be tricky: synthetic and over-processed, scents have become a mass-produced market promising exclusivity and delivering toilet water.

Lest I begin to enjoy the smell of fecal matter, here are my top three scents for the man in my life. This means you.

Let’s begin with where we should: Tom Ford, Grey Vetiver. For winter, it’s perfect, like a frozen forest beginning to melt. The vetiver has been stripped down, and its wake is silvery and clean, coupled with rich amber wood, a heart reminiscent of old barbershops with nutmeg and pimento berry, and top notes of fresh grapefruit. It’s like a brisk early morning walk in the crunching snow, in your warm wool coat, the smell of fir and wood crackling into your nostrils, your girlfriend’s mittened hand in yours. (50ml – $85)

Frederic Malle, I adore you. The fragrance counter at Holts comes complete with walk-in scent chambers and climate-controlled refrigerators, a row of heavy glass bottles and an expert  (and very friendly) retailer, Jenna. Mr. Malle, who’s father founded Les Parfums Dior, saw the over-saturated market, and handed the creation of  his exquisite scents over to eleven top ‘noses’ in the industry. Undoubtedly, my favorite is Bois D’Orage from Pierre Bourdon, described as ‘the ultimate male fragrance: modern, eternal and refined.’ Mixing notes of pimento, iris, cedarwood and vetiver, the scent is a sharp grey suit in a cafe in Rome (or Toronto), an espresso in hand, on your way to work. The price is steep, but five hours later, the scent is strong on my wrist, and each time I smell it, my knees go weak…I might steal this one from you. (100ml-$260, 50ml – $175)

Esteban Parfums Paris, sold at Ziggy’s at Home on College are a sensual adventure into historically rich scents. Three classically male scents: Cedre, Ambre and Cuir, lightly land on the skin, but are heavy essential oils, combining beautiful notes like mint and cardamom with leather, and spiced rose and lemon with cedar. Two hours later, the scents have revealed their sweet and sultry side, like a Frapin aged cognac, warmed in your hand.

All three lines are perfect for our cold weather, bringing out the sexy musk of your skin and embedding it into your scarf, your collar, your coat. There’s nothing more that we want to smell than you, heightened.

Like I stated previously, now that I know Tom Ford has a scent I really want to buy it. The man is a genius! I’ve always been a big fan of fragrance, and my love for the discipline has only refined with age. However, being introduced to the effects of such smells on the finer species is nice to hear. Knee-buckling, swooning, and sighs are reactions I’m always on the look out for. Great work!

Wow, great job! Actually in the market for a new sent but I’m not the ‘experimenting type’. I just don’t buy it because it seems popular or someone famous or creative is attached to the brand. I love the cologone I wear now http://fimgs.net/images/perfume/nd.805.jpg
but am really interested in a new sent. REALLY interested in your description of Malle actually….

Frederic Malle is incredible. I’m definitely a convert – and he has less expensive scents. I just like that he detached himself from the mainstream and allowed the artists to do their job the way they pleased.

Yes Tom Ford is amazing, everything he touches turns to gold. He has several scents for men – and a whole line of exclusive essential oils. Obviously you can tell I think he’s pretty close to the heavens… Thanks!

Wowzers Clara! You make me want to take some formal writing classes! What an inspiring and enlightening piece. Amazing work. I’m definitely a cologne guy. I always have been. Right now, I switch between, Polo Blue, Polo Black and Burberry Brit. What do you think? Up to sniff…. PUN INTENDED! BAM!
