Mic Check YYZ Pt. 2

Mic Check YYZ: This is an idea I’ve had for awhile, to cover the artists, events, locations, and news relevant to Toronto and its hip-hop culture. The other week I gave you a soft and scattered start. Now it’s time to pick up the pace.

Event: David Versis <3/$

On August 25th the Vandals fearless leader headlined his first Toronto show. Held at the Wrong Bar in Queen West it was impressive to see the venue packed and eager with anticipation. Backed by his band “Made Men,” and accompanied by singer “Kristen Anzelc” there was no question a lot of preparation went into the endeavor.

Split into two acts the first covered his love for the craft, and the second his quest for the green. The first saw him belting out his internet hits, and the second crooning over local classics while strumming his guitar. Decorated in NinetySix custom made t-shirts, his look screamed “V’s Up!” Both t-shirts were emblazoned with his signature lyrics: “James Dean, John Lennon,” (from “Be More Fresh); and “Monroe Sass, Hepburn Class,” (from “Undercover Girl).

All in all it was methodical, thought out, and refreshing. Versis is my boy so I knew it would be pleasure just to see him perform, but to see him excel was a blessing beyond expectation.

News: Syph/Littles The General “Perfect Strangers”

Nu Money member “Syph” recently teamed up with Littles The General to release an team-up effort titled, “Perfect Strangers.” I’m a little late with this one, but better late than never. And never have I heard Canadian rappers so guttural and braggadocios.

Syph stands as the Toronto element in this mix, but Littles must not be overlooked. This Nova Scotian native is a beast, and he’s throwing a birthday bash at Crown Lounge September 15th!

Until then download the mixtape >>> HERE <<< check the press release below, and enjoy my favorite songs from this cleverly crafted mixtape.

Impressed as always brother! Loved all of the music covered in this piece. Btw, I been on that syph and litttles shit before, I just didn’t know their names. Saw that first video like 5 months ago. Good look. I’d love to work with Verses (as you know), and hopefully in the future, the two of us can make some magic together. For now, he’s doing an amazing job and I’m really happy to see this guy grow into exactly what he wants to become. He’s got a fuck load of talent and plenty of heart. Toronto is looking up dog, and I thank you for this necessary coverage. Salut!

Figured you’d dig Littles/Syph, glad to know you do. Also, next time Versis does a show you have to come through. You would have loved it. Another Mic Check YYZ coming next week on MegaMan and Luu Breeze ;)
