Hot Wax: Summer Selections

The internet has not only turned me into a mixtape fiend, it’s also permitted my suppliers to improve upon their content and delivery. Previously I’ve discussed my appreciation for the distribution bay Datpiff, and I’ve left their docks again with crates full of grade-A product.

First, there’s Gucci Mane’s latest, “Writings On The Wall 2.” After exiting jail for the umpteenth time the ice-cream-faced-gangsta has teamed up with DJ Holiday for another choice offering. Their chemistry has been tried, tested, and trial after trial remains true. Though there is nothing outstanding on this release, it’s definitely that outlandish fanfare that Gucci groupies love to hear. Production credits include Lex Lugar, Shawty Redd, and Zaytoven; with guest features from artists like 50 Cent, Yelawolf, and Jagged Edge.

Next on deck is the West-coast ambassador, Game. Although “The R.E.D. Album” was supposed to drop last summer, it’s good to hear its predecessor sounds bumping again this year, (with the continued hope that it will release later this month). However, before that blood stained disc floods store shelves Game has returned with his favorite DJ (Skee) for some introductory madness. The guest roster is insane, and the production value top notch. This is must bump material. Grab a sixer of Corona, some grenadine, and a sub-woofer with the ability to knock your neighbor’s doors down!

Last but not least, my girl Kreayshawn. This Bay Area babe is a whole lotta new. She sounds similar to her city-wide comrades; the thizzed out sounds of Mac Dre echo through her bravado. That said, she is a white girl with attitude, the likes of which rap has never seen. Her first mixtape is out, and it is certainly set to spark some serious debate. I know that Sucka Free kids will understand her sparse and trippy sound, even if they don’t appreciate it. By far the strangest mix I’ve heard all summer, but there is enough here to like, and a lot left to look forward to.

Glad you dropped this piece. I’d be choosing a different line up for my summer selection, though I respect yours as well. Love that Game tape. The Red Album is going to be Banittles. There’s sooooo much amazing music right now, and I’m so thankful to be a fan of hip-hop because of it. Mixtapes are saving the industry and the artists within it.

I wouldn’t say this is my top 3 for the summer, perhaps “Candy Coronas” would find its way into that list however. Sorry 4 the Wait is by far my fav tape, and the rest herein are those I felt needed to get out there. I’m always trying to digest as many tapes as I can, get that diverse view of the game, and send out my recommendations. More to come as always.
