Miami Heat – Mid-Season Report Card

In the beginning, we we’re angry; but now we don’t know what to feel.  Sure we hate them; we boo them every chance we get; but we sure as hell pay attention when they play don’t we? This team is an enigma wrapped in a mystery and there hasn’t been another like them since the Bad-Boy-Detroit-Pistons!

Now let’s get down to grading:

Offence: B+

With three stars in James, Wade and Bosh everyone anticipated “Showtime.”  It hasn’t really worked out that way however, as much of the season’s been spent learning to work together. As the year’s progressed the coaching-staff’s grown in understanding their players, (e.g. Wade plays better with Bosh, and LeBron doesn’t).

In the open court they dominate, in half court sets the team has a “stand and watch” tendency, (which will hurt them in the post-season).  With all that said, second over-all in the East isn’t bad.

Defence: A-

Their most unexpected success is their defence!  Ranked 4th in the East the Heat’s Team-D has been relentless.  Between Wade and LeBron’s hand-checking, and Bosh’s help-defence they’ve definitely over-achieved.  But key injuries to big rebounders, (especially Udonis Haslem), may work against them in the future.

Coaching Staff: A-

Really?  These guys?  How hard could it be to coach MVP candidates like LeBron James and Dwayne Wade?  In real terms though, the pressure has been immense.  Coaching two alpha-males used to running their teams their way.  Bosh, unsettled with his 3rd option status; and Pat Riley waiting in the wings for you to fail.  Getting everyone on the same page has been a work in progress.

40-year old Erik Spoelstra should be both congratulated and sympathised with.  If he loses, he’s crucified; if he wins, it’s only because he was expected to!

Ownership: B

On one hand they‘re to be admired for successfully scoring three-all-stars under salary cap.  On the other, the big-threes supporting staff is extremely suspect!  Other than Mike Miller and Udonis Haslem (both currently injured) the rest of the team consists of has-beens and never-will-be(s).

One game behind the top seated Celtics is no small achievement though.

Over-all Grade: B+

You remember that kid in school who always got straight A’s?  Then, when they got their first B, they fell to tears?  Well that’s the Miami Heat.  Things have not come easy for this team and people just love to criticize them.

The danger with a team like this is, when you play with a chip on your shoulder and an “us against the world” attitude, you tend to make your mark.

Bring on the playoffs!

I’ve definitely spent time watching, booing, and perhaps underestimating this team. Nevertheless, I don’t think they have a hope in hell of earning a trophy with the Celtics and Lakers still in the league.

They are the new age Cleveland Cav’s. They’ll hustle in the regular season, get some good numbers, and if they are lucky… make it to the conference finals. They don’t have the level-heads and leadership to make it any further.

I despise this team and everything they stand for. With this new approach to the NBA, (I.E. playground-pick-em-bulls**t), there is little hope for the league in the near future. With pre-modonna’s abounding, and this mentality being brought to the likes of the Knicks… I again reiterate that I despise this team.

That said, I love the break-down. You definitely understand basketball better than anyone I know, and it is always a pleasure to hear you discuss the game. Keep it up!

I definetly relate to all of the sentiments you put forward here. I grew up in a league where you hoped for one superstar and tried to build around that. I remember when Rodman signed a free-agent deal with the Bulls and I was trippin!

That said though I have learned that there are basically two ways to go forward in life; acceptance or denial. The league (and world) will move on whether we like it or not. Does this bode well for a team like my Golden State Warriors…NO! But just like i’ve come to accept new forms of music and movies I think I have to do the same with the NBA.

These new age players are 100% different than the old. It is unfair for me, who is in his mid 30′s, to judge how they live on a serious way. I for one an glued to this side show…will it work? What chance do the Knicks have now? And the Bulls with Boozer/Rose/Noah? It’s definetly the ultimate male soap!

I know I should accept it… but I instead hope for their downfall regardless, LOL! The Bulls though I find to be a more logical force. Yes, they are all stars, but more so together than independently. I just can’t stand how Stern is letting this league fall to pieces. Hopefully the ratings are up at least.

Great piece man. As you know, I don’t follow sports, but the little information I’ve gathered on the Miami Heat thus far seems to match these grades perfectly. And I loved your analogy comparing the straight A’s kid to the Miami Heat! So true. I think that sums it up perfectly. It’s almost dissapointing to watch. Great read though. You always impress me sir.
