How am I supposed to write about “Love” in 500 words or less? I’ve struggled with this self-appointed assignment for nearly two weeks now, and like a Divine Mystery, the answer still alludes me.

Initially I wanted to discuss the concept in purely positive terms; an idealistic interpretation of the emotion wherein I would explain it as purely good. Although I still hope for this utopia, I know that the reality of it is more complex. Thus, the only way I can properly discuss this topic is to open up my heart.

Love to me is the unexpected meeting of two strangers. One casual evening wherein two independent heart-beats see, skip, and synchronize. It’s that stand-offish chase, that childish game of peek-a-boo where hands fall from eyes to reveal the soul’s desire. Love is playful at first. It comes into your life and becomes your smile; possessing the muscle movement and stimulating the thought. Love leads to holding hands, touching lips, and public confessions. It leads you to bed, it wakes up next to you in the morning.

Love also comes with pain. It comes with confusion, anxiety, and sorrow. Love seemingly works to betray the heart, to lead it to self-doubt and inner turmoil. It pushes apart as much as it pulls together. Love in this state lifts those hands back over the eyes to guard their falling tears. Love can just as easily release your grip, remove your lips, and shut the same from speaking. Love can be torn from the fabric of today making it hard to rise tomorrow.

Nevertheless, I believe in love. I’ve been in love. I am in love. One day a smile, next day a tear, I can’t understand it… but I can’t live without it. I wish I was better at holding onto love, and expressing the same. Alas, I’m a seeming failure in this regard. This is to be expected though; love can not be forced or coerced. It is given, it is received, but it’s hard to promise. Yet, despite this frightening reality, life is too short not to experience the madness of love. For the love I have been given, for the love that has been taken away, I remain consumed with gratitude.

Question: What is love to you?

I know how hard this was for you to write brother. Love you for it.

Love is something people really seem to confuse. They are fully expecting it to be stuff of dreams and movies and written words, and sometimes it is. but we live in reality and the full light of day and people need to understand it takes WORK. shit aint free, it costs in heart and mind and flesh and when people EXPECT things to work out and not MAKE things work with that one they love they will always be left with their bags on the curb and traffic rushing by.

Love to me is a fulltime job with a billion dollar paycheck. It keeps you warm at night but keeps you awake as well.

Thanks for those words big bro, they mean a lot :)

Brain I love how you liked Johnny’s quote. I realize more and more how much you two are alike.

It`s definitely a full-time job, but I`m not sure you can put a billion dollar price-tag on it! I`m jaded, but even I know that loving and being loved in return is priceless. It`s like winning an infinite version of the cash-for-life lottery; once you have it, you grow to expect it, when you fear losing it, you appreciate it more, and when you need it the most, you thank the divine forces that gave it to you in the first place for sharing such a blessing.

ACTUAL CHILLS DUDE!!! Insanely good piece. You hit the nail on the head with this one. You make a player want to hang up the domes. Unbelievably moving. Kudos.

…or as Snoop says in collabo w/ John Legend, I Can Change, “make me wanna lay down the pimpin’ and step my love game up”

Love to me is how much of yourself you can give to others. Love to me is the sacrifices I make to bring positivity into the lives of people around me. When ever I’m presented with a task that I’m not keen on, I remind myself that I’ve been given an opportunity to share my love with someone else. I see Love as something to give, and share. I don’t look at love as something to hold onto… It only goes away when you stop giving it.

One of the greatest examples of love I’ve ever seen is the love my father has for my mother.

The other day my mom came out of surgery, and she was looking a little flush, so my dad called in the nurse, and she told my him to Just giver her some water, and that she’d be fine and that she didn’t have a fever. 10 mins later he came back with a 4 liter jug of water. To my close friends, it’s no secret my mother is sick, and the love my dad gives to my mother is even less of a secret. I’ve never met anyone in my life who actually lives by their vows the way my dad does. “through sickness and in health”

Over the past year, I learned the true definition of love. I learned about love from the greatest teacher this world has ever had on the topic… Christ. In a general sense, he practically wrote the book on it. It wasn’t until I started to learn from Christs actions that I truly understood my father and the sacrifices he made for my brother and I… and the ones he continues to make for my mom.

Thanks buddy… that was truly moving.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always preserves.”

So well done Jon, everything about this is beautifuly done and most of all its gotta a whole lot of love that you put into it.

Brian I agree with your statement on so many levels… also very moving, it reminds me of what my grandmother used to tell me … if your looking for what love really is .. look at the sacrifice Christ made…. and share that kind of love with those around you.
