DD172

First the ‘Roc Boys’ break-up and since they won’t make up, everybody’s asking, “where’s Dame?” You know… Damon Dash? The man who launched Jay-Z and Kanye West’s careers? The reason behind (Dreamland Co-Creator) Chris Elliott and I becoming friends.

Earlier in 2010 Chris and I were assigned the task of transitioning a major advertising account. Excited to be a part of this difficult undertaking I made it a point to find some common grounds with the kid. Interestingly enough Damon Dash was the first subject to spark some serious conversation between us.

Since those early days Chris has written several blogs on Damon Dash and his related ventures. Recently I wrote my first with my review of Pilot Talk 2. Now that we are nearing the close of #unofficialhiphopblogweek I bring you thee essential Dame blog, the answer to where he’s been: DD172.

DD172 is an umbrella organization containing the various media assets created by Mr. Dash. The company’s name relates to its Tribeca headquarters, (i.e. 172 Duane St. New York City); and housed within this riverside estate are its six-essential entities.

America Nu: This MagCloud powered online magazine chronicles Dame’s antics and entrepreneurial ongoings. It’s a digital photo-mag that gives fans an artistic look at how DD172 is “break[ing] conformity [to] redefine a universal lifestyle.” The entry issue is $30 for the hard-copy, but it can be viewed-in-full here.

BlurRoc: In the spirit of 1996, Dame has returned to his recording roots by establishing this do-it-yourself music label. Home to artists like Currensy and Stalley; BluRoc is responsible for the Pilot Talk series, and the ongoing 24 Hour Karate School.

Karin+Raoul: The more risqué side-of-things, Karin+Raoul is essentially a hi-definition fashion blog. In addition to showcasing in-house products like Tiret, it also contains an online archive of the art on display at The Dash Gallery.

Color Bar: Named after the proxies used to measure proof attributes, it’s a graphics company which creates print media for DD172 and all of its individual needs. From promotional posters to fan-friendly tees, The Color Bar has a Pop-Up Shop for all your random needs.

For more information on their online television venture check Chris’s blog on Creative Control. Also, be sure to click the hyperlinx herein to explore the online media world that is DD172.

So with that said let me repeat the introductory query, “Where’s Dame?” Well, it looks like Dame’s been busily preparing the future for all us cool kids ;)

Awesome piece man. I really liked how you laid everything out. People need to get more hip to this. DD172 is a powerful indie movement and its conceptions are paving the way for future in New York’s urban scene.

Agreed! You are the one who hipped me to this whole movement after all. Honestly, my adventure with the label, and the experience researching them, has only made me hunger for more. Pilot Talk 2 out now!!! 24 Hour Karate School Japan coming soon!!!

Damn, didn’t know there was all of these off-shoot entities that Dame has going. I really hope he can maintain them this time as it was a bit difficult for him post-Roc years back. I’ve always loved this guys hustle from days and miss his reality show!

Never forget him and Jay in the videos though, this guy was the first guy I ever saw poor a whole bottle of liquor on a female…guy is crazy!

    good job!

I knew you’d appreciate this. I think that with the Umbrella idea/having everything housed in a central spot will keep things in order. Essentially it is a just a company the covers all aspects of its production and promotion… IT’S GENIUS!
