Avengers

“The series that started it all was the X-Men.” For nearly a decade I only collected X-titled comics, and then I read Civil War.

In 2006 Mark Millar and Steve McNiven flipped Marvel Comics on its head by pitting their good guys against each other. Captain America led one side and Iron Man the other. Two friends – two iconic heroes – went to war over ideals.

At the time I didn’t know much about these costumed gentlemen, but I knew enough to feel the tension splashed across every page. I also knew, after I laid down the first issue, that I had a lot of Avengers comics to catch up on.

The Avengers are an elite and ever-expanding group of powered people. Since their debut in 1963 they remain “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.” Unlike the X-Men they are adored by the world they protect; and although my youthful angst refused to accept them, maturity forced me to reconsider.

I’ve been a nerd my whole life. I was never the most popular, attractive, or talented kid in class. I was a nobody-runt like Steve Rogers. Who? Maybe you know him by his codename: Captain America. Easily the greatest member to ever lead the Avengers, Captain America is also the greatest leader in comic book history! With no powers beyond his enriched blood he has nevertheless led gods and conquered time travelers. He was a geeky kid who became a legendary icon, and he is my favorite superhero!

Starring in my Top 3 Avengers stories to date (i.e. Avengers Forever; Avengers/Invaders; and Civil War) I could go on about Cap all day! However, I’d also like to share with you my Top 6 members aside from the flagged-father.

6.) Justice: a telekinetic with a big heart. Vance’s troubled story is inspirational.

5.) Scarlet Witch: one of the rare mutants in the group, she impresses me because her honesty, passion, and power.

4.) The Wasp: Janet is simply adorable; a fashionista with a brain!

3.) Ant-Man: the “Scientist Supreme!” Need I say more?

2.) Hawkeye: the wise-cracking comic relief/trustworthy heart of the team.

1.) Black Panther: a king, a warrior, and a man of timeless honor.

With more members and stories than I could share in a hundred blogs the Avengers are a movement you shouldn’t miss. If you’re too scared to pick up a comic be sure to line up for their first film coming 2012!

THE AVENGERS ROCK!!! Its like having the NBA All-Star Team, but in the Marvel Universe!

What I’ve always liked about the Avengers was the chemistry between each member. They all complement each other in battle, but the internal conflicts between members and themselves individually that made the books interesting. Everything from Hank Pym’s meltdowns, the love triangle between Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch and Vision, to the constant pressure from the government, heated things up for this title.

My favourite Avengers have to be:

    1) Iron Man – The team wouldn’t have any of its tech, if it weren’t for Tony! Plus he’s one of the founding members.

    2) Captain America – I totally agree with Jon on this one. He’s the guy you need on your team when you need a good battle strategy to fight guys like Baron Zemo or HYDRA.

    3) Black Panther – He’s pretty much the African equivalent to Batman.

    4) Scarlet Witch – All I have say is – never piss off a chick that can warp reality!

    5) Hawkeye – I like him MUCH better than Green Arrow!

Oh yeah if you guys haven’t tuned in, you can catch the Avengers on Teletoon every Friday night! Its an awesome cartoon! The way the Avengers should be done from the start.

I was hoping to hear from you my man! I can’t help but agree with all you said and I love how we like all the same members… hahaha! I wanted to throw in Tigra, Moonstone, Luke Cage, Doctor Strange, Vision and yes… my boy Tony Stark too! I also wanted to include my absolute fav Avengers villian KANG!!! (so I threw in the time traveler reference).

Lastly… I also got mad respect for the new Captain America: Bucky! I’m so proud that he was the one to pick up the shield.

OOOH!! I forgot about those guys!! Vision is one of the most underrated characters in the Marvel U. The story behind him is soo dope.

Honorable mentions go out to Wonder Man, She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, Captain Mar-Vell, Photon, Thor, and we can’t forget about our friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!!!
